When everything become automated, from a team of 30 DBA become 10 DBA to support more then 2000 instance database worldwide . Will it be possible ??

Yes , it is because there are already alot of third party tools or even Oracle Grid to proactively monitor those instances.

Predictable item

1)tablespace monitor including redo log ,temporary tablespace ,system tablespace too

2) table /index Segment monitor

3) User session vs max process define

4) lock session such as in-doubt open transaction

5)physical log file such as sqlnet.ora , alert.log , dump file , trace fil and we will try to trim when necessary to free out diskspace for logical file growth such as datafile .

6) Oracle listener functionality

7) Buffer chache , library cache hit

Unpredicatable item -Customer request

1) User session hang and resolve , sometime might due to firewall setup and ODBC connection problem

2) User request for create scheme user and database user which is under security

3) Constantly monitor any user define schema whether is there any violation on using sys/system privvillege indirect granted.

4) Customer request for performance testing

As what mention by one of the fellow DBA , will newer version of database is going to replace human DBA ? Yes it will but definilty that it will be in reduce support staff but it never going to totally remove people out from the work.

Want to know when you website/blog goes down or just want to monitor your website uptime ?

According to the Author of this program , HootMonitor was initially an site that would allow you to login with a Twitter account , add a site to be monitored and a Direct Message will receive when that site went down.

Of cause there will alway be a premium and free account available. , check it out as below or this direct link

I just sign up and give it a try , check out my uptime an response time dashbaord , i don’t know whether is it my working experience and mix me up for Uptime and downtime…:)

Ps. Some point to take note , if we require an notification to be send to any of the address or online social media , just click those sign will do.

so why you still waiting for ? if you are in limited budget and you have a site/blog then it will be good for started to have this kind of report in places.

Digsby is just like pidgin which also support multi-protocol IM such as MSN ,Yahoo, Jabber(Still exist) , Gtalk and ICQ…

In fact when i switch to use Digsby at home is because i need to find a smaller utility which enable me to remove msn & gtalk as well. (Now even i ‘m removing gtalk from my laptop too).

While Digsby is great in the way it keeps track of our social network such as MySpace , Facebook and Twitter up-to-date. In actual i did’t realy use this feature because i don’t even bother to login to this social network through office hour (Just too many work to do). Chatting/IM is the only thing which connect me and some of my close friend together.

This is how it look like when i add in my email account , social network , IM together .

With all those small memory resident icon on my taskbar…when i check it through at Process Explorer , the amount of memory is lesse too. , lets see how long this program can stay on my laptop..:)

Feature summary

1) Lesses memory , of cause PC run faster..

2) All feature can be disable individual without shutdown the whole services.

3) Increase work efficency while we focus only on 1 program instead nowday alot of people need to login and run program such as MSN Live , Gtalk , Tweeter plugin , Facebook and etc..

4) For blogger like us ou can place a widget on your blog, website, or social network profile so you can chat with visitors right from digsby.

Recently i read through feed from Windows Blog which talk about Hotmail from Arthur de Haan (Director, Windows Live Test and System Engineering) who responsible on Test and System Engineering in Window Live. who explain what it takes to build, deploy and run Windows Live Hotmail services on global scale.

As what he mention hosting mail and data (and also their own data!!) on their servers is a big responsibility and he take quality. performance , and reliability very seriously. Microsoft have make significant investment in engineering and infra to help keep hotmail up and running 24 hours a day , day in and day out , year after year. Although we something complaint on thing which goes wrong but we don’t know how many effort is putting on the backend.

Some highlights on his post are

  • We are a worldwide service, delivering localized versions of Hotmail to 59 regional markets, in 36 languages.
  • We host well over 1.3 billion inboxes (some users have multiple inboxes)
  • Over 350 million people are actively using Hotmail on a monthly basis (source: comScore, August 2009).
  • We handle over 3 billion messages a day and filter out over 1 billion spam messages – mail that you never see in your inbox.
  • We are growing storage at over 2 petabytes a month (a petabyte is ~1 million gigabytes or ~1000 terabytes).
  • We currently have over 155 petabytes of storage deployed (70% of storage is taken up with attachments, typically photos).
  • We’re the largest SQL Server 2008 deployment in the world (we monitor and manage many thousands of SQL servers).

SQL Server 2008 in live production for Micrsoft Live ???? I believe only Microsoft dare to put new version on production but not other company can do this. Even with customer my company support we don’t really implement latest database version except if special request by customer and also the hosting and infra tools must be able to support as well.

I will like to focus on this

Here are a few of the ways we keep failures contained:

  • Redundancy – We use a combination of SQL server storage arrays to host our data. We use active/passive failover technologies. This is a fancy way of saying that we have multiple servers and copies of your data that are constantly synchronized. If one server has a failure, another one is ready to take over in seconds. All in all we keep four copies of your data on multiple drives and servers to minimize the chance of data loss due to a hardware failure. Another benefit of this architecture is that we can perform planned maintenance (such as deploying code updates or security patches) without downtime for you. Key pieces of our network gear are also duplicated to minimize the chance of network-related outages.
  • MonitoringWe have an elaborate system for monitoring hardware and software. Thousands of servers monitor service health, transactions (for example, sending an e-mail) and system performance for customers all over the world. Because we’re so large, we’re tracking performance and uptime metrics in aggregate as well as at the cluster level, and by geography. We do want to make sure that your individual experiences are reflected back to us, and not getting lost when we look at averages for the entire system. We care about every single user’s experience. We’ll talk more about performance and monitoring in a future post.
  • Response center – We have a round-the-clock response center team that watches over our global monitoring systems and takes action immediately when there is problem. We have an escalation process that can engage our engineering staff within a few minutes when needed —Again from India i believe

Overall we can see that even with a Free services , Microsoft is taking serious on maintain their delivery and deploy new technology into the Free business used. We should be thankful for this .

at the same time i can see that Microsoft is using MS Live Hotmail as beta-land for their new SQL Server 2008 . I wonder how is the technology deploy behind this…it must be a gigantic system.

Full copy of the article can be read from this http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windowslive/archive/2009/12/22/a-peek-behind-the-scenes-at-hotmail.aspx

Today receive a good news from my google email about OpenDNS is offering their innovations of the last 25 years service call “SmartCache”- A DNS record-handling technology, renders frustrating authoritative DNS outages irrelevant for OpenDNS users. Its both incredibly simple and invaluable to Internet users.Use OpenDNS

Heres how it works: When an authoritative DNS provider suffers an outage, all of the Web sites it provides service to are taken offline. They’re inaccessible for everyone on the Internet. But no longer for OpenDNS users. Our servers will now immediately look for the last known good address for the site in our caches, and use that to load the site. So effectively OpenDNS users will be able to access Web sites that appear down for everyone else. For our millions of users at businesses, schools and libraries around the world, saving them Internet access interruptions and the time they waste is invaluable.

Authoritative DNS outages happen frequently and can be a big problem. Just a few weeks ago, it’s reported that major authoritative DNS provider UltraDNS suffered an outage that took Salesforce.com, Amazon.com and Petco.com offline for several hours. In such a case, SmartCache would fix the inaccessibility problem and allow people to visit the sites through the outage.

SmartCache is available immediately as an opt-in feature. Just log in to your dashboard and look for the check box in your Advanced Settings. For those tech geeks, this only applies to queries where the authoritative server hands back a SERVFAIL response code in addition to any query that simply goes unanswered.

I enable it already , how about you ??…

Further good news.is

With another datacenter in Netherland , It show to us that OpenDNS is really into the business for everyone .They usinga technology call Anycast – it means no matter where you are in the world, your DNS requests route through our closest datacenter. When we do maintenance, our routing topology ensures you will route to our next closest datacenter. It also means that when we bring up a new datacenter that is closer to you, your DNS requests will go to it.

From top to bottom we have:

  • Operations machine for management
  • Juniper MX480 Router
  • Cisco 2950 Switch for management
  • 3 SuperMicro Twin2U Servers (each with four servers in a single chassis)

Database, Oracle

Recently when up and down to get our PR to negotiate with customer about setting up a stream and guess what , today we have 4 Order to do a pre-requisition for Stream Setup.

While i asking customer to give us their overview on how they want it to be lay out and how is the interface for their DW environment.

Here is something i manage to find from OraNA , it is true that Stream is just something lack in Oracle ,hardly to find documentation about that. but luckily i still manage to get some from Lewis C.
